basswood has to be my favorite but I enjoy butternut’s grain, tulip poplar, cherry, and tupalo for power carving, diamond willow makes a great stick, walnut and cypress knees can challenge your edges. Cottonwood bark has been very good to me also. Ihave an ash stick I want to carve soon but haven’t had time to start another.

  3. Most of my practice has come from apple. Pain in the butt to carve, very hard. There is a point where the wood actually gets too smooth to sand down any further. I would like to get a lathe to make some chess pieces or even pens from it.

  4. I have heard that basswood is very easy to dent. How much stronger does polyurethane finish make it? I’d like to put a panel of the stuff on an instrument case, and it’s likely to get a few dings in its existence.

  5. Bern, I would not recommend basswood for the case. That will require something stouter – maple, oak, birch – which will be able to take the dents.

    • Hi Sue,

There are many sources for cotton wood out west. You could Google and get lots. I, however, like to scrounge for my own here in Illinois. I do have a supply in storage. Would you like some to try? How much would you like? Have you tried cotton wood already? Are you looking to get into bark? Let’s talk some more. Shalom, John

    • Hi Sue, Happy Easter to you. Just wanted to let you know that I came home from Michigan today with a car load of bark. Have really nice pieces if you are interested. Happy carving.
